"Inspire has greatly enhanced my quality of life."

Hanspeter experienced problems with the CPAP mask.

For a long time Hanspeter was suffering from loud snoring and breathing interruptions lasting up to one minute at night. This disrupted his sleep and the constant lack of rest left him feeling tired and less productive during the day and he frequently experienced microsleeps. After being diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea in a sleep laboratory Hanspeter was prescribed a CPAP mask which is common for OSA. However despite trying various masks he was unable to tolerate CPAP therapy and developed chronic sinusitis.

“Over time, due to the sinusitis I got used to not using the CPAP ventilation whilst sleeping. Of course that became a problem for me because the symptoms returned, “ Hanspeter explains in his interview.

Small newspaper ad — big impact.

He was looking for alternatives to the CPAP mask. A newspaper advert caught Hanspeter’s attention which lead him to sign up to an informational event about treating obstructive sleep apnoea with upper airway stimulation. He immediately scheduled an appointment with Prof. Dr. Heiser and after further examinations discovered that he was eligible for Inspire therapy.

The process moved quickly and Hanspeter received the Inspire upper airway stimulation implant on November 2015. After the upper airway stimulation was activated he needed some time to adjust the nighttime stimulation which was tailored to his needs. It can take 3 to 6 months for the optimum setting effective therapy to be established.

“I feel more rested and productive now compared to before starting the therapy”

Since having the upper airway stimulator implanted over 8 years ago Hanspeter has successfully managed his snoring and breathing interruptions. He says that both his sleep quality and overall quality of life have improved significantly.

To ensure that this continues a small battery replacement was recently performed, it went smoothly and Hanspeter was able to use the upper airway stimulation as usual on the day of the surgery. Both Hanspeter and his wife are still very happy after more than 8 years and would choose Inspire Therapy again at any time.

* Inspire therapy is suitable for patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea. For patients with a confirmed medical problem with CPAP, such as a CPAP mask intolerance, Inspire therapy may be an effective treatment. For this reason, patient testimonials are only given from those patients for whom treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (e.g. with a CPAP mask) has failed. The product category (C)PAP mask is not called into question. Individual treatment outcomes may vary.
