“I used to dread going to bed at night.”
Discontinuation of the CPAP therapy
The ENT specialist suspected that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) was the cause of Karin’s symptoms. He referred her to a sleep laboratory and the diagnosis was made quickly. Karin is one of approximately 20 million OSA patients in Germany. She was prescribed a CPAP mask to reduce the risk of serious secondary conditions and to treat the interruptions to her breathing at night. While many OSA sufferers cope well with the CPAP mask, Karin experienced issues such as air in her stomach. Shortly after she experienced a panic attack and after struggling for a long time Karin decided to discontinue the CPAP therapy.

A fresh start – with Inspire, but without the mask.

While searching for alternatives to the CPAP mask, Karin came across a report about the Inspire upper airway stimulation online. She found new hope and reached out to the Inspire Medical Support Team who quickly arranged a preliminary consultation for her at the nearest treatment centre. After undergoing the preliminary examinations it was confirmed that Karin was a suitable candidate for Inspire therapy.
Soon after the upper airway stimulator was successfully implanted.
Common side effects include temporary pain and swelling at the surgical site. As is usual the system was activated for the first time 4 weeks after the surgery. In the weeks following the activation the therapy was tailored to meet her specific needs. It usually takes between 3 to 6 months for the upper airway stimulation to deliver its optimal results.
New Experiences with Inspire Therapy:
Thanks to the Inspire upper airway stimulation Karin now enjoys a renewed sense of energy compared to before her condition was diagnosed. She says she now feels more optimistic about the future. Thanks to the therapy, both her breathing interruptions and snoring have been significantly reduced. Now she and her husband can enjoy more peaceful nights of sleep. “My husband sleeps like a log now an I also enjoy sleeping in our shared bedroom again”, she reports. To ensure that this remains the case, a check-up is carried out once a year by her doctor. Based on her positive experiences she now recommends the therapy to other who are affected.
“I hope that in the future ENT doctors will offer patients comprehensive information about alternative treatment options after a failed CPAP mask trial.”

* Inspire therapy is suitable for patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea. For patients with a confirmed medical problem with CPAP, such as a CPAP mask intolerance, Inspire therapy may be an effective treatment. For this reason, patient testimonials are only given from those patients for whom treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (e.g. with a CPAP mask) has failed. The product category (C)PAP mask is not called into question. Individual treatment outcomes may vary.
