“I could barely keep my eyes open”
“I just couldn’t sleep well with the mask on.”
A few years ago Petra consulted a cardiologist about her high blood pressure. When she reported her debilitating daytime sleepiness the doctor suspected obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). She was referred to a sleep laboratory where they observed prolonged interruptions to her breathing during the night leading to a diagnosis of severe obstructive sleep apnoea. It is rare for obstructive sleep apnoea to be identified as quickly as it was in Petra’s case. Many people affected by obstructive sleep apnoea suffer from the effects of the condition for a long time and go without treatment for years.
Petra was prescribed a CPAP mask to maintain her oxygen levels throughout the night. However she soon realised that she did not want to wear this mask every night for the rest of her life. Petra felt as though the mask was a foreign object and noticed air blowing onto her eyes. “I was only willing to tolerate this for a short time, but not forever!”

The perfect alternative for Petra B. – Inspire therapy.

Petra used the CPAP mask for about three months but she found it increasingly difficult to tolerate and wear it throughout the night.
In her search for alternative options she discovered the Inspire upper airway stimulation online. Petra eventually visited Prof. Maurer in the ‘Sleep Medicine’ department of Mannheim University Hospital.
After an examination in the sleep laboratory (polysomnography) and a sleep endoscopy procedure, Petra was informed that she was a suitable candidate for the upper airway stimulation and was scheduled for the surgery.
Immediately after the surgery there may be mild pain or swelling at the site where the stimulator was implanted.
In the weeks following the surgery Petra worked with her doctor to adjust the therapy to her individual needs, as the stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve can feel unfamiliar, particularly at the beginning.
The above patient testimonials regarding sleep apnoea treatment refer to individual treatment results. The statements are genuine, representative and documented. Responses to therapy may vary and is not always the same. Patients received reimbursement for travel expenses and an allowance for time spent in connection with their testimonials.
* Inspire therapy is suitable for patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea. For patients with a confirmed medical problem with CPAP, such as a CPAP mask intolerance, Inspire therapy may be an effective treatment. For this reason, patient testimonials are only given from those patients for whom treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (e.g. with a CPAP mask) has failed. The product category (C)PAP mask is not called into question. Individual treatment outcomes may vary.
